New peace formula for Syria promotes role of Iran, but likely to fail

Ozgur Tufekci, Middle East analyst and Chairman of CESRAN (Centre for Strategic Research and Analysis) headquartered in the UK, said in an interview with Sunday’s Zaman that it would be unrealistic to expect Iran to help the West topple Assad. “Annan’s plan only aims to stop fighting, nothing more,” Tufekci said, adding that the former UN secretary-general is trying to rescue his six-point peace plan by getting Iran involved in the peace process.

“The West has realized that it does not seem rational to soothe tensions without the involvement of regional powers such as Iran,” Tufekci said.

Sacrificing Good Sense on the Altar of Identity - Turkish Armenians at a Glance

The tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia rose once again early this month due to the deadly armed clashes along the border. The confrontation has intensified and the number of fatalities reached nine. Consequently, the possibility of further escalation of the crisis causes anxiety within the international community and among neighboring countries. However, our attention is confined to the way the conflict is perceived and reported on by transnational Armenian diaspora communities aside from the international dimension of the dispute. We particularly place emphasis on the reflections of conflict among the Turkish Armenians and in their discourse regarding identity.

In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- Antony Ou, China Representative, Centre for strategic research & Analysis (CESRAN); Maj Gen (retd) G D Bakshi, Former Research Fellow, IDSA; M K Bhadrakumar, Former Diplomat; Air Marshall (Retd) P S Ahluwalia, Former Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern And Western Region; Brig (retd ) V Mahalingam; and Capt (retd) Bana Singh, Param Vir Chakra Awardee -- discuss India's moment of triumph as the country successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable Agni-V Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile today (April 19). The surface-to-surface Agni-V was launched from a mobile platform from the Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast at 8:07 a.m. This has placed India at the threshold of an elite five-member club that possesses ICBMs. The missile is 17.5 metre-tall and two metre-wide and it weighs around 50 tonnes, including a 1.5 tonne dummy warhead.
